April 11, 2025 | Kampala, Uganda
On April 11, 2025, the Mandera Climate Resilience Institute convened a high-level virtual dialogue featuring Seth Inman of Climate Investment Partners and Phillip Kihumuro, MSc of WWF Uganda. The session explored opportunities for scaling carbon market projects in Uganda and across sub-Saharan Africa, offering practical insights for practitioners and emerging carbon developers.
Phillip Kihumuro shared experiences from the newly launched Natural Forest Regeneration for Enhanced Carbon Stocks in the Albertine Rift (FRECAR) project—WWF Uganda’s first carbon initiative funded under WWF International’s 21-year partnership with the VELUX Group. This 20-year project focuses on forest protection and restoration in the Kangombe–Bugoma landscape of western Uganda. It employs a mix of strategies, including active tree planting, boundary strengthening, and community engagement to reduce pressure on forests while improving livelihoods.
The FRECAR project uses the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) standard to ensure high-quality carbon outcomes and directly contributes to Uganda’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in the forestry sector. For participants, this presentation provided a real-world example of how large-scale, community-inclusive carbon projects are designed and implemented
