Mandera Climate Resilience Institute
"For People and Nature"
What we do.
At Mandera Climate Resilience Institute (CRIM), we are dedicated to building climate resilience for people and ecosystems across East Africa. Making a difference, differently – we advance innovative solutions to climate challenges, guided by our motto “For People and Nature.”
On the frontlines of climate change, African communities are experiencing increasingly extreme weather events, ranging from droughts to floods, in a region that is warming faster than the global average.
Mandera Climate Resilience Institute responds with a fresh approach: we empower communities, harness nature-based solutions, develop climate finance frameworks, and innovate for sustainable development through research, capacity building, training, and technical support services.

Testimonies of our Carbon market learning series participants
"Participating in the fellowship strengthened my capacity to support Burkina Faso's carbon market development. It deepened my understanding of Article 6 mechanisms and exposed me to real-world projects, enhancing my policy design and implementation skills at the Ministry of Environment"
"The fellowship deepened my understanding of carbon markets and project development. I’ve since applied this knowledge to improve project concept notes at Uganda’s Ministry of Water and Environment, strengthening our engagement in climate finance and carbon market opportunities."
"The fellowship strengthened my understanding of Uganda’s carbon market and global best practices. It enhanced my technical capacity to support district-level carbon projects, ensuring they align with national priorities for climate resilience and environmental conservation."
"The fellowship deepened my understanding of voluntary carbon projects and key concepts like baselines and additionality. It informed my research on woodland restoration in Sudan, where I now integrate carbon finance assessments and explore REDD+ pilots in dryland forests."
"The fellowship deepened my understanding of carbon market frameworks, especially Plan Vivo and Verra. I’ve applied this in WWF projects and am developing a concept with Ecotrust and NFA to conserve an island forest reserve through carbon finance."
"The fellowship deepened my understanding of carbon pricing and its impact on agriculture. I’ve since initiated a carbon footprint assessment for dairy farmers in Zimbabwe and integrated carbon market strategies into project planning to enhance sustainability in the livestock sector."
"The fellowship enhanced my skills in carbon project design, stakeholder engagement, and gender integration. I’ve already applied this knowledge in two recent projects and now feel confident developing impactful carbon initiatives and connecting them with credible buyers in Uganda."
"The fellowship deepened my understanding of carbon markets and project development. I’m now building a database of indigenous trees under our FMNR initiative, with plans to develop a carbon project, aligning our work with national climate resilience and NDC goals."
"The fellowship clarified the carbon project cycle and showed how GIS supports reforestation planning and emissions tracking. I’m now developing a GIS-based proposal for carbon mapping, aligning my academic goals with practical climate action and spatial science applications in Uganda."
